This is exactly what a Z needs to be. Like, it sticks to the formula where the new Supra didn’t. Old-school, manual, turbocharged import deliciousness. The grille is fine too. It’s meme-worthy, and that’s good!

Jalopnik alum Alanis King created one of many great memes of the new Nissan Z Proto, which I’ve edited as the zoomy GIF above. Used with permission.

What do y’all think of the newZ?

W ell I’ m no dats un/nissan fanboy so meh, I love a car with a particular attitude, even if it’s not an attitude I’d buy. Dodge Challenger is a case in point. B ut this one seems rather ... limp.

Fair point with the Challenger; that definitely has a stronger attitude from the factory.
The Z is
way understyled versus the competion,
which I contend is
good for a 2020s decade car. The aftermarket can (and will) give the Z plenty of attitude. I think the clean lines are a good move on Nissan’s part and it’ll age a lot better than the Supra.

I always thought the Challenger was kind of stupid. Then I drove one through a tunnel. Now I get why its a thing. Plus it wasnt as terrible at autocross as I thought it would be. It might have been shooting oil out of the exhaust but hey turning via throttle is fun.

Do you think it’s perhaps trying to borrow too much from the 240Z?

Well i think the z has been uncompetitive since like 2010 or so when the coyote v8 mustangs came out, so if they significantly increase the price, especially since it looks like the same body, it will stay that way. Its rival starts at 36k, makes 460 hp (and can be supercharged to 700 on the factory warranty) and has back seats. Would say the z has the edge in handling but now mustang has IRS. So weight is the only thing it has going other than it being a true two seater, and a new mustang is right around the corner apparently.

I’m pretty sure I’m in the minority thinking this, but IMO the grille is good on its own without the metadiscourse.

I find the lights look like the new Nissan logo, without the middle.

As an owner of a coyote mustang, the handling is “meh” without the performance pack. I have the stock suspension and it’s pretty floaty. And it’s s heavy car that feels heavy. It actually drives heavier than some challengers I’ve driven. Although the 10speed shifts fast, it has no soul.
Anyway, the mustang feels like a lot of go-fast parts of a car that were designed by committee. The sum does NOT equal the parts.
Anywhoo- maybe the Nissan will come across looking better in another color? That yellow is hideous. It might actually drive nicely too.

It’s like it’s the evolutionary inverse of the backlit Mercedes-Benz star logo. Can’t unsee now; thank you!

I’m not sure the average joe- or buyer- even notices. But I haven’t driven either so I can’t speak to that.
